Today is the first day to vote absentee for the Aug. 4 primary election at the Cole County Clerk's Office.

Absentee voting is available 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the clerk's office, located on the second floor of the Cole County Courthouse Annex, 311 E. High St. in Jefferson City.

The last day to mail out absentee ballots is July 22, and the last day to vote absentee at the clerk's office is Aug. 3.

The last day to register to vote in the August primary is July 8.

All but one of the candidates who filed to run for Cole County elected offices were Republicans and are seeking nomination to represent the party in the November general election.

Candidates are listed here in the order they will appear on the ballot.

Republican candidates who filed to run for Western District commissioner are Gary Bemboom, Harry Otto and incumbent Kris Scheperle.

Republican candidates who filed to run for Eastern District commissioner are Rick Mihalevich and incumbent Jeff Hoelscher.

Republican candidates who filed to run for assessor are Jonathan Roy Meyers, Rick Prather, incumbent Chris Estes and Alex Meller.

Republican candidates who filed for Cole County's new second associate circuit judge position are Brian K. Stumpe, Todd T. Smith, Matt Willis and Tim Anderson. Democrat Scott Evans also filed as a candidate for Cole County's new second associate circuit judge position.

Republican candidates who filed to run for circuit judge, Division 2, are incumbent Judge Dan Green and David Bandre.

Republican candidates who filed to run for circuit judge, Division 3, include current Associate Circuit Judge Cotton Walker and former Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson. This position is currently held by Presiding Judge Pat Joyce, who is retiring.

Three offices had only one candidate file for the election, all Republicans. They include Ralph Jobe, who is running for public administrator. Current Public Administrator Joe Kuensting resigned June 1 and will not run for re-election, and Jobe was appointed interim public administrator June 10.

For treasurer, incumbent Eric Peters is the only candidate to have filed. For sheriff, incumbent John Wheeler is the only candidate to have filed.

As of now, there have been no indications this election will be moved because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the April municipal elections were postponed to June, Cole County Clerk Steve Korsmeyer said.

Korsmeyer urged anyone with questions about absentee voting or registering to vote to call his office at 573-634-9101 or find the county clerk's webpage on colecounty.org.
