Rick Mihalevich, who currently serves as Jefferson City's Ward 2 councilman, announced his candidacy Tuesday for Cole County Eastern District commissioner.

"Leadership, decision making and fiscal responsibility are among the greatest assets I bring to the voters of Cole County," Mihalevich said in a news release. "I will combine these skills and abilities with dedication of my time to issues that impact all the communities of Cole County."

Mihalevich, a Republican, manages a cattle operation and is co-owner of Missouri Hunting and Outdoor Adventures.

As a city councilman, Mihalevich serves as chairman of the council's Finance Committee; has chaired the council's Public Safety Committee; and was elected as president pro tem of the council, which means he performs the functions of the mayor in her absence. Mihalevich also serves as the city's liaison to Columbia Regional Airport Advisory Committee and chairs the Heartland Port Authority of Central Missouri.

He is term-limited as a council member; his term expires in April.

Jeff Hoelscher, also a Republican, is currently serving as Eastern District commissioner. Although he hasn't made a formal announcement, Hoelscher said Tuesday he plans to seek re-election.

Other Cole County offices up for election in 2020 include Western District commissioner, sheriff, assessor, public administrator and treasurer.

There will also be an election for the circuit judge seat currently held by Presiding Judge Pat Joyce, who is retiring, as well as the newly created second associate circuit judge position. The circuit judge position currently held by Judge Dan Green is also up for re-election.

Filing for countywide offices in 2020 officially opens Feb. 25 and ends March 31. The primary election will be Aug. 4, and the general election will be Nov. 3, 2020.
