Eric Peters seeks 4th term as Cole County treasurer

Eric Peters announced Wednesday he will seek a fourth term as Cole County treasurer.

Peters was first elected treasurer as a Republican in 2008.

He previously served two terms as Cole County Western District commissioner, elected in 1996 and again in 2000.

"My current term has focused on several priorities including protecting our demand deposits, growing our investment portfolio, and continuing with receipting and reconciling county revenues on a daily basis," Peters said in a news release.

Peters cited new and continuing cyber threats and scams as "a challenge his office has continually met with vigilance, thwarting asset theft attempts."

Peters said a cooperative effort involving the County Commission and county auditor has resulted in a new county investment policy which has enabled his office to take advantage of investment yields unavailable during his first and second terms in office.

"We've taken advantage of the increasing U.S. Treasury rates during the post-recession climb, and now we're locking in longer-term rates as yields have adjusted downward and plateaued for the time being," Peters said. "And when it comes to the daily receipting and reconciling, which is the bread and butter of any treasurer's duties, I hired a very capable deputy, Mark Ruether, who spent 34 years with the state auditor, has a CPA and is a true asset to how my office operates so smoothly."

Other Cole County offices up for election in 2020 include Eastern District commissioner, Western District commissioner, sheriff, assessor, public administrator and treasurer.

There will also be elections for two circuit judge seats as well as the newly created second associate circuit judge position.

Filing for countywide offices in 2020 officially opens Tuesday and ends March 31. The primary election will be Aug. 4, and the general election will be Nov. 3.
