Shirley Ann (Bower) Moore

Shirley Ann (Bower) Moore, age 87, passed away on August 1, 2021. She was born in California, Mo., on December 17, 1933, the daughter of Sam and Edna (Zey) Bower. Shirley was a lifelong resident of California and attended and graduated from Aurora High School in 1951. Her classmates, a hardworking and fun-loving group, are remembered in love. She was united in marriage on December 27, 1952, to Donald R. Moore. He left this earth on August 13, 2014. The marriage was performed by Rev. Elmer Koch at California United Church of Christ. For nearly 30 years, Shirley was employed by Burgers Smokehouse. She also did a little painting and wallpapering. Shirley was a member of the California United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities, including teaching Sunday School classes for 24 years, and was a dedicated member of the U.M.W. Shirley was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and grew up listening to their games on the radio (before T.V.) with her father, Sam. Shirley also delighted in pinochle games with family and neighbors. She was a student of the Civil War Era and Abraham Lincoln's life, visiting nearly all of the battle sites, Lincoln's memorials and National Parks. Her favorite movies include Gone with the Wind and Lonesome Dove, both of which are period pieces heralding courage, honor, and relationships. Her personal beliefs include the fact that in the end, we are responsible for only one person - ourselves. She and Don were the parents of two children: Michael Moore, deceased (Peggy, and son Joe Parrish) of California, Mo., and Patrice (Pat) Moore of California, Mo. Shirley's brothers and sisters were William Bower, and Sammy Bower (both deceased), and twin sisters Sue (Joe) Goedde, and two children, Joseph (Alicia) of Ballwin, Mo., and Christina of Jefferson City, Mo., and Sarah (Ralph) Ernst of Springfield, Mo. Visitation will be at Procter Park-North Shelter House in California, Mo., on Saturday, October 2, 2021, from 12-2 p.m. Memorial Services will follow at 2 p.m., with Rev. Nicholas Van Dam officiating. In case of rain, the visitation and service will be located at Windmill Ridge Funeral Service. The family requests that those in attendance wear their St. Louis Cardinal gear. Private family inurnment will be held at the California City Cemetery. Shirley had several non-profits that she regularly supported, from youth health and Christian services to historical, conservation, and disability assistance.
