Anthony Herman "Tony" Bauer

Anthony Herman "Tony" Bauer, age 97, of Westphalia, formerly of Freeburg, departed this life, on Sunday, February 7, 2021, in StoneBridge Westphalia. He was born on June 19, 1923, in Osage County, a son of Henry and Theresa (Redel) Bauer, Mr. Bauer was inducted into the United States Army on August 14, 1944, at Jefferson Barracks and served until May 21, 1946, when he was honorably discharged at Jefferson Barracks Separation Center at the rank of Private First Class. During his military career, Mr. Bauer attended the Cook and Baker Course - Armored Force School, Fort Knox, Kentucky, for eight weeks ending in 1945, and his military occupational assignments included Field Artillery Basic Training (521), Field Lineman (641) as a member of the 781st Field Artillery Battalion, Camp Bowie, Texas, and Cook (060). He was assigned to the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, prior to his discharge, and was awarded and entitled to wear the American Theatre Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. A man of excellent character, Mr. Bauer's "Honorable Discharge" is a testimony of honest and faithful service to his country during World War II. He was united in marriage on February 5, 1949, in Freeburg, to the former Miss Muriel Lucille Waidelich, and to this union, four children were born. Mr. Bauer was a life-long member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Freeburg, and was a 1941 graduate of the Freeburg High School. He was also a member of the Mens Sodality, the Holy Name Society, the Msgr. Gerold J. Kaiser Knights of Columbus Council 9700, and for over 70 years, the Paul A. Hasenbeck Memorial American Legion Post 317, all in Freeburg. Growing up, Mr. Bauer assisted on the family farm, and after high school, for a period of two years prior to his military service, worked for the Benedictine Sisters Convent, Clyde, Missouri, doing general farm chores. After being in the military, he continued in farming and livestock until opening his United Farm Real Estate Agency, Freeburg, in 1960, and working there until his retirement in 1995. Those left to mourn the passing of Mr. Bauer include: His four children, Dewayne Bauer (Donna), Koeltztown; Carolyn "Renee" Wolf, Lohman; Steven Bauer (Jane), Freeburg; and James Bauer (Carol), Vienna; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; nephews; nieces; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel, on December 6, 2014; his son-in-law, Dean Wolf, on April 20, 2019; one grandson, Randall Dewayne "Randy" Bauer, on June 7, 1993; his father, Henry, on April 17, 1961; his mother, Theresa, on December 27, 1960; and his three brothers and eight sisters, August G. Bauer, Sophia Wilbers, Sister Frances Teresella Bauer SSND, Leona Locker, Rev. Sylvester W. Bauer, Bro. Leonard (Roman) Bauer, Sister Germanus (Minnie) Bauer SSND, Elizabeth "Betty" Goedde, Sister Bergine (Hilda) Bauer S.SP.S., Mary Goedde, and Infant Mathilda Rose Bauer. The human body is a valuable, irreplaceable resource in the training of physicians, and Mr. Tony Bauer has generously given his earthly body for medical education. Mr. Bauer's family is having a private Mass of Christian Burial for him on Saturday, October 30, 2021, in Holy Family Catholic Church, Freeburg, with the Rev. William D. Debo as the celebrant, under the direction of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Vienna.
