Verna Gilliland

Verna Gilliland, 83, of Jefferson City, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on October 1, 1937, in Sikeston, Missouri. Verna was united in marriage on October 26, 1956, to Elmer "Gillie" Gilliland, Jr. Verna graduated from Vanduser High School in Vanduser, Missouri. She attended business school in Cape Girardeau. Verna was a full-time loving mother who stayed home to take care of her two sons and helped her husband with his business. She was a member of First Church of God where she cherished teaching Sunday School, playing the piano and singing. Verna was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed embroidery, quilting and sewing. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her sons: Russ Gilliland (Shelley) of Edwardsville, Illinois and Randy Gilliland (Norma) of Lohman and grandchildren: Paige, Scott, Mariah and Alexis. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother: Kenneth Cowell and sister: Stella Wisdom. Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2021, at First Church of God. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Joe Gregory officiating. Interment will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston, Missouri.
