Charles Henry Backman

Charles Henry Backman, 85, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Heisinger Bluffs in Jefferson City. He was born June 15, 1935, at Lutheran Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Rinehard and Ida (Tubbesing) Backman. Charles grew up in Chicago, Ill. and when he was 12 years old his family moved to Cuba, Mo. then to St. James, Mo. when he was a Junior in high school. Charles graduated from high school in St. James, the class of 1953. On May 8, 1954, at St. John's Lutheran Church in St. James, Charles married his high school sweetheart, Vera Hemme. Charles worked for International Shoe Company until he was drafted into the Army 1958-1960. International sent Charles to Vandalia, Mo. where he worked until International Shoe Company closed in 1963. Charles and Vera moved to Jefferson City where Charles went to work for Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance. He later attended and graduated from Capitol City Business College. Charles then went to work for Family Benefit Life Insurance Company until retiring as a Life Underwriter in 1997. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church-Schubert and was an active volunteer for American Bible Society, Heisinger Bluffs and visited the homebound through hospice. Survivors include his wife, Vera Backman of Jefferson City; one son, James (Sue) Backman of Westphalia; three grandsons, James Charles (Kelli) Backman of Rosebud, Eli (Mallory) Backman of Chamois, Josiah Backman of Westphalia; two granddaughters, Jamie Asbury of Springfield, Victoria (Patrick) Holmes of Westphalia; and eight great-grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Deborah Trujillo. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until noon, Monday, March 15, 2021, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home. Funeral service will be noon Monday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald Scheperle and Chaplain Jim Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are welcome to attend services while following social distancing guidelines. Facial coverings are suggested while in attendance. Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church at Schubert or Kindred Hospice of Jefferson City. Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
