Katherine Mary Schedler, 79, of Jefferson City, passed away on July 6, 2021, at Boone Hospital Center. She was born in 1942, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late J.C. and Marie (Herbel) Bruton. Katherine was united in marriage to Edgar "Ed" Schedler in 1978, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Schubert. She was a 1960 graduate of Muskogee Central High School. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree in speech pathology and a master's degree in deaf education. She worked in Kansas public schools, the Missouri School for the Deaf in Fulton, and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Katherine cherished her upbringing in the Lutheran church and was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school, organized dinners, and was a sign language interpreter. After surviving breast cancer, she helped found the Community Breast Care Project. In retirement, she volunteered as a nursing home ombudsman and was active in long-term care culture change efforts. She served as a CASA volunteer and was honored to help children through difficult situations. Her fondest memories were of time spent with extended family and friends in Oklahoma and her husband, children and grandchildren. Katherine is survived by her daughter, Sarah Schedler; step-children, Laura Vinehout (Michael), Amy Ragsdale (Darrell), and Mark Schedler (Lesa); brother, Jim Bruton; grandchildren, Jay Vinehout (Mary Alice), Luke Vinehout, Karen Ragsdale, David Ragsdale, Sydney Schedler, and Abbey Schedler; niece, Julie Bruton; nephew, Jarrett Bruton; a great-nephew and great-niece, and a host of cousins and brothers- and sisters-in law. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Schedler, aunts and uncles, and several cousins. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2021, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Grace Episcopal Church with inurnment following at Riverview Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Vitae Foundation, Capital City CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), or Grace Episcopal Church.
