Robert J. "Bob" Stahl

Robert J. "Bob" Stahl, 98, New York City, died Saturday, July 18, 2020, at his home. He was born Feb. 28, 1922, in Haverhill, Mass., a son of Richard and Annie Stahl. After Bob's birth, the family moved to Redwood City, Calif., where he spent his childhood. Married three times in his life, his first wife was Elizabeth Sherrett, who preceded him in death. He was married to Bernice Rosenberg who preceded him in death. He then was married to Evelyn Diatkin for more than 40 years until her death in 2015. Bob displayed early interest in electronics as a boy. He built his own ham radio equipment and obtained his ham radio license when he was 14 years old. After being encouraged by his science teacher, Bob applied for and won the Marconi Scholarship. This enabled him to enter RCA Institute, the oldest radio school in the United States, in 1940. After graduating, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. He fought at the battle of Okinawa before being stationed in Korea. In Korea he was responsible for the reconstruction of the country's entire power grid. After the war, he was employed by several companies doing what was then cutting-edge technology, from mass spectroscopy to radar. He was instrumental in the development of early television technology and subsequent color television. In his younger years he was employed at Berkeley Scientific Corporation, Dalmo Victor, Color Television, Inc., and Sylvania, all in the state of California. Eventually Bob became general manager of General Telephone and Electronics, a large communications company. In 1963, he decided to change career direction after moving from California to New York City. With his wife Elizabeth, Bob started a consulting business of his own to help families relocate when transferred by employers. This became a successful business in its own right, and after being president for a number of years, Bob retired. Survivors include: one daughter, Nancy L. Morris, Jefferson City; one son, Douglas C. Stahl (Susan), Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Carolyn Smith, Orangevale, Calif.; three granddaughters, Jennifer S. Azar (Michael), Natalie S. Morris (Travis Schaefer) and Katharine J. Morris, all of Jefferson City; and six great-grandchildren, Matthew C. Benne (fiancée Rachel Thaemert), Marina N. Azar, Zachary T. Azar, Dominic M. Azar, Parrish R. Morris and Honor N. Morris, all of Jefferson City. Bob also is survived by a beloved niece, Melody Lee, New York City, who cared for him with devotion for the past few years. Other survivors include nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Rick V. Morris; one sister, Gloria Kneubuhl; and one brother, Lawrence Stahl. No services are planned. Burial will be in Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home, White Plains, N.Y.
