Velda K. Ogar, 96, of Mexico, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2020, at the King's Daughters Home in Mexico. Velda was born on September 22, 1923, in DuQuoin, Illinois, the daughter of Valdie Jefferson and Lillian Virginia (Beers) Kane. On November 27, 1947, in East St. Louis, Illinois, she married Adolph Andrew "Oggie" Ogar. He passed away on June 15, 1987. Velda graduated from the nursing program at Garfield Park Community Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. In August 1958, she began working on the OB unit at Audrain Medical Center in Mexico. After 37 years, she retired but continued to serve on the Audrain Medical Center Board. Mrs. Ogar was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She loved gardening, flowers, and would put many long hours into her yard work. She remained active in her later years by walking in several races and could be found daily exercising at the YMCA. Velda is survived by eight children, Kathy Quick (Robin Turley) of Jefferson City, Cynthia MacPherson (Frank Cottey) of Mountain Grove, Velda McKenzie (Gene) of Centralia, Sherryl Laws (Keith) of Harrisburg, Karen McDermott (Kelly) of Syracuse, New York, Vince Ogar (Jan) of O'Fallon, Adolph "Oggie" Ogar (Kay) of Mexico, and Helen Ogar (Paul Lawrence) of Bloomington, Illinois; 22 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, with one on the way. In addition to her husband, "Oggie", Velda was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Anne Quick and Scott Laws; four sisters, Opal Righter, Berta Hicks, Luella Meyer, and Geneva Miller; and an infant brother, Edward Kane. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, at the First Presbyterian Church in Mexico with Rev. Dr. Woody Berry officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation is Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home in Mexico. Memorial donations may be made to the King's Daughters Home Employee Fund or the Mexico YMCA.
