John Robert Drainer, 85, of Jefferson City, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at his home. He was born on December 28, 1934 in Spalding, Missouri, a son of the late Victor and Hazel (Hetzel) Drainer. He was united in marriage to Nina Mae Nelson on March 14, 1957 in Bowling Green. After graduating from Farber High School in Farber, Missouri, John joined the United States Navy and would proudly serve for the next 20 years. Upon retirement he had earned the rank of Chief. He was awarded the Good Conduct medal four times and the National Defense Service ribbon. John moved his family to Jefferson City and put down roots. He worked as an air traffic controller and managed the Jefferson City airport from 1973 to 1996. He was a devout member of Immaculate Conception Church and was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, gardening, watching the St. Louis Cardinals and college sports. He was a proud father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his children: Diane Irwin (Don), Dawn Stegeman (Roger) and Robert Drainer (Kim); grandchildren: Cole Stegeman (Sarah), Taylor Stegeman (Liz), Lexi Stegeman, Kyle Irwin, Carson Drainer and Elizabeth Drainer; great-grandchildren: Houston Stegeman and Saylor Irwin-Loon; and sister: Ruth Ann Jones. John was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years: Nina Drainer, and three brothers. Family and friends will be received from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 6, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Donald Antweiler officiating. Interment is private for the family. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
