Galen R. Hammann, 63, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2020, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born on September 18, 1956, in Jefferson City, a son of the late Martin and Norma (Erhardt) Hammann. He was united in marriage to LaVern Bruning, June 28, 1975, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City. He attended Jefferson City High School. He started working at Ramada Inn/Truman Hotel after high school and remained there for 42 years. He currently worked at Cole County R-1 Russellville School District as a Maintenance Supervisor. Galen joined the Cole County Fire Protection District in 1975 as a firefighter. After 45 years of service, he obtained a rank of Senior Assistant Chief. He was also a member of the Cole County First Responders. He had a passion for helping people in need and enjoyed mentoring new fire personnel. He worked on the family farm where he enjoyed taking care of his cows, bailing hay, butchering, cutting wood, gardening, and all things that come with taking care of a farm. He enjoyed hosting fish fries and barbeques but his greatest passion was spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, and friends. Galen is survived by his wife of 44 years, LaVern Hammann; daughter: Kim Long (Matt) of St. Thomas; son: Jason Hammann (Chelsea) of Jefferson City; brothers: Wayne Hammann (Russellville), Donnie Hammann (Jefferson City), Robbie Hammann (Jefferson City); sister: Terry Zumwalt (Lohman); grandchildren: Shelby Long, Mason Long, Jocelyn Hammann, and Sadie Hammann. Galen was preceded in death by parents: Martin and Norma (Erhardt) Hammann; sister: Diana (Hammann) Hager; sister-in-laws: Dianne Hammann, Anita Hammann, and Theresa Hammann; brother-in-law: Denny Zumwalt; nephew: Craig Hammann; niece: Hollie Hammann. Family and Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2020, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Interment will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Education Fund for the Grandchildren of Galen Hammann.
