Mrs. Charlene Callie Christine Sommerer, 84, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at St. Joseph's Bluffs. Charlene was born December 7, 1933 in Honey Creek, Mo., a daughter of the late August and Josie (Gemeinhardt) Propst. She was married on July 27, 1956 at her parent's home in Honey Creek, Mo. to Herbert Sommerer. A lifelong resident of the Cole County area, Charlene attended Ambrose Public Schools, Immanuel Lutheran School at Honey Creek, and graduated as Valedictorian at Eugene High School in 1951. She was employed as a dental assistant with Drs. Suggett, Pope, and Standlee. Charlene was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Honey Creek and after her marriage to Herb, she became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson City. She was also a volunteer with the American Red Cross and was a Boy Scout Den Mother while her sons were in Scouts. Survivors include: her husband of 62 years, Herbert Sommerer; two sons, Alan (Wentao Pan) Sommerer of San Jose, Calif., and Bruce Sommerer of Jefferson City, Mo.; one grandson, Sam Sommerer of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Goe of St. Charles, Mo., and Gloria Sommerer of Phoeniz, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, James (Betty) Sommerer of Jefferson City, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by: her sister and brother-in-law, Nina and Rev. Dr. Arno Meyer; brother-in-law, Raymond Sommerer; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Hoehler and Dorothy Eckert. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2018. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2018 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Sam Powell officiating. Graveside services will follow at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Assn.
