Virgil Leo Wieberg

Virgil Leo Wieberg, age 71, of Freeburg, departed this life on Sunday, October 22, 2017, at his residence in Freeburg. Virgil was born October 20, 1946, at the family farm near Freeburg in Maries County, a son of George Theodore and Gertrude Ann (Schwartze) Wieberg. He was united in marriage on April 22, 1995, at the Pilot Knob Baptist Church near Belle, to the former Miss Mildred Ann Brown, who survives at their home in Freeburg. Virgil was preceded in death by his father, George, on January 2, 1972; his mother, Gertrude, on January 27, 1994; and two brothers-in-law, Warren James "Jim" Collins on February 17, 1995, and Maynard Faulkner. On February 24, 1966, at Fort Eustis, Virginia, Virgil entered in active federal service in the Army of the United States and served until February 23, 1968, when he was honorably discharged on February 23, 1968, at Fort Story, Virginia, at the rank of Corporal. During his military career, he was awarded and entitled to wear the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, the Sharpshooter Badge (M-14 Rifle), the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. A man of excellent character, Virgil's "Honorable Discharge" is a testimonial of honest and faithful service to his country during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Paul A. Hasenbeck Memorial American Legion Post 317, both in Freeburg; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America Post 8045 in Argyle. During his working life, he had been employed in residential construction by the Herb Stratman Construction Company, Freeburg, and later was self-employed in miscellaneous construction work for a total of more than 40 years, retiring in 2015. Following his working full time, Virgil became employed as the custodian and groundskeeper for the Holy Family Church and School. He especially enjoyed all types of yard work, flower gardening, and woodworking. In addition to his devoted wife, others left to mourn the passing of Virgil include: His siblings, Alvina Collins of O'Fallon, Fred Wieberg and wife, Phyllis, of Freeburg, Gerard Wieberg of Freeburg, Arnold Wieberg and wife, Joyce, of Wardsville, Felix Wieberg and wife, Laura, of Holts Summit, and Marceline Luebbert Faulkner of Jefferson City; a brother-in-law, Bob Luebbert, of Jefferson City; nephews; nieces; and other relatives and friends. A Prayer Service will be held at 4:30 p.m. with visitation continuing until 7:00 p.m., followed by a joint American Legion and VFW Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, in the Holy Family Catholic Church, 104 Oliver Street, Freeburg, Missouri. Visitation will continue from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 26, 2017, in the church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mr. Virgil L. Wieberg at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 26, 2017, in the Holy Family Catholic Church, 104 Oliver Street, Freeburg, Missouri 65035, with the Rev. William D. Debo as the Celebrant. Interment, with full military honors, will be in the Holy Family Cemetery in Freeburg under the direction of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home in Vienna.
