William "Bill" Thomas Zumwalt, Sr., 79, of Jefferson City, passed away Monday, March 20, 2017, at Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Center. He was born July 15, 1937, in Jefferson City, the son of M.W. Jack and Minnie (Goldammer) Zumwalt. He was united in marriage to Ann Louise Blaser from 1961 - 1987. To this union was born two children, William T. Zumwalt Jr. and Kenneth W. Zumwalt. On September 24, 1988, he was united in marriage to Betty Gail (Hoffman) Fischer-Zumwalt, who preceded him in death on September 30, 1999. A life-long resident of Jefferson City, William attended Trinity Lutheran School, and graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1955. He went on to graduate from Jefferson City Junior College in 1957. He served two years in the United States Army and four years Active Army Reserves, from October 18, 1960 to September 30, 1966, with part of his tour of duty spent in Germany. After serving with the United States Army, William returned to Jefferson City and joined his father's business, Jack Zumwalt & Son Auto Repair. William retired and closed the business in 1998 after 43 years of service to the area. William was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had served on the Board of Elders. He was also a member of The American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post #5. He is survived by one son: Kenneth W. Zumwalt (Clarissa) of Hiram, Ga.; three step-children: Kelli Smith (Shawn) of Kansas City, Kent Fischer (Genee') of Tipton and Kyle Fischer (Jamie) of Tebbetts; one sister: Clara Schwermer (Robert) of Arlington Heights, Ill.; one grandchild: Zachary Zumwalt; five step-grandchildren: Alex Smith, Kaitlyn Smith, Blake Fischer, Braden Fischer, Jase Fischer; one daughter-in-law: Mary Zumwalt of Jefferson City; two brothers-in-law: Gary Hoffman (Kay) of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Roy Linhardt of Colorado; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Fischer-Zumwalt, sister Betty Jean Linhardt and son William T. Zumwalt Jr. Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Houser-Millard Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Sam Powell officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of Sympathy may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Building Fund, Lutheran Hour Ministries, Heit's Point Lutheran Camp, Calvary Lutheran High School or the Charity of donor's choice.
