Dr. Lyle Harold Hedges, 80, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2017, at Parkside Manor, Columbia, Missouri. He was born April 5, 1937, in Augusta, Arkansas, the son of the late Arthur Marion and Bonne Francis (Callaway) Hedges. He was united in marriage on August 3, 1968, in Marion, Iowa to Maryanne Krob Castle who preceded him in death on July 13, 1999. Lyle was a 1955 graduate of Lamar (Missouri) High School and a 1959 graduate of the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He continued at the University of Missouri receiving his Masters in Education in 1965 and PhD in Educational Administration in 1971. He served his country with the United States Navy as an anti-submarine specialist. Dr. Hedges was a supervisor with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in the Federal Grants Management Section, retiring on May 1, 2006. A devoted husband and father, Dr. Hedges was a world traveler. Together with his wife, he flew in a hot-air balloon in Kenya; and visited the Coliseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and Machu Picchu in Peru. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Jefferson City; the American Legion; and the University of Missouri Alumni Association. Survivors include a son, Scott Martel Hedges, Jefferson City; a foster-daughter for whom he cared for 46 years, Hazel Elaine Gann, Jefferson City; and a sister, Bonnie H. Greer, Marshall, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and a brother, Arthur Hedges. His body was donated to the Department of Anatomy at the University of Missouri. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2017, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Daniel Hilty officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 2413 Hyde Park Road, Jefferson City, MO 65109; or the American Heart Association, 915 Country Ridge Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65109.
