Charles A. Newman, 86, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Heisinger Bluffs. He was born December 17, 1930, in East Chicago, Indiana, the son of the late George and Palma (Adkins) Newman. On August 23, 1953, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, he married Charleen E. Luehring. Charles graduated from College High School, Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 1949. He was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University and later received a Masters in Education from the University of MissouriColumbia. Prior to his employment with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in 1965, he was a secondary business education teacher and high school principal at Fox High School in Arnold, Missouri. He was proud to be a fourth generation public school teacher. He was employed as the first Director of Business and Office Education with DESE and worked for 22 years until his retirement in August, 1987. During his employment and related to his business education duties for DESE, he served as Chairman of the National Board of Directors for the Future Business Leaders of America. In 1987, the National Business Education Association presented him its highest award, The Distinguished Service Award, in recognition of 30 years of outstanding service in education. He held professional memberships in several organizations, including the Missouri Business Education Association, Missouri Vocational Association, Pi Omega Pi, and Phi Delta Kappa. For more than 40 years, he served as a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the administrative board of the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City. Charles was a member of the Missouri National Guard and retired with the rank of Captain. From his love of service to our country and interest in family genealogy, he was a member of the Christopher Casey Chapter of the Missouri Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He served as the chapter's vice president and secretary for many years. After his retirement, he became active in several retiree organizations. He served as president of the Cole County Area Retired Teachers Association and the Jefferson City Chapter of AARP. At the state retired teachers level, he was a second vice president and state legislative chairman. He also served as a senator in the Missouri Silver Haired Legislature where he helped to improve retired teachers' compensation. Charles enjoyed traveling with his family and yard work. He was an avid reader and loved to cheer for the Mizzou Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. He cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include: his wife of 63 years, Charleen; two sons, Stephen G. Newman (wife Tammy) of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Daniel A. Newman of St. Louis, Missouri.; a sister, Alice Roselee Wachter (husband Donald) of Gilbert, Arizona.; and three granddaughters, Jessie, Rachel, and Mary Grace Newman. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Daniel Hilty officiating. Private entombment will be held in the Mausoleum of Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, 201 Monroe Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101 or a charity of the donor's choice. His visitation will now be held from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 15, 2017, at Freeman Mortuary with his memorial service immediately following at 4:00 p.m. Sunday in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Daniel Hilty officiating.
