Stephen J. Cheshire

Stephen J. Cheshire, age 65 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, September 29, 2016, at SSM St. Mary's Hospital. Steve was born October 18, 1950, in Tuscumbia, Mo., the son of Joseph and Lucille Meloy Cheshire. He was married on December 27, 1969, in Jefferson City, Mo. to Deborah Frank. A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Steve was a 1968 graduate of Jefferson City High School where he pitched for the Jefferson City Jay Baseball Team and played on the Jefferson City Jay Golf Team. He attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. He was employed with the Missouri Army National Guard for 36 years, attaining the rank of Sergeant Major, retiring as the Warehouse Manager with the United States Property and Fiscal Office in 2005. Steve was a life member of the Missouri National Guard Assn.; was the Treasurer of the Area 2, Retired Chapter MONGA; a member of the Enlisted Assn. of National Guard of the United States; a valued member of the Retired Old Timers with the Missouri Army National Guard; and a member of the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5. He played for years on the Missouri National Guard Golf Team/Missouri State Golf League at Oak Hills Golf Course. He enjoyed playing golf and in his younger years playing baseball and later softball. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Steve was a generous and caring person who loved spending time with his family and friends, occasionally drinking a Stag beer with them. Survivors include: his wife of 46 years, Debbie Cheshire; two sons, Jay J. Cheshire of Jefferson City, Mo. and Ryan J. Cheshire and his wife Jennifer of Jefferson City, Mo.; two brothers, Mike Cheshire of Jefferson City, Mo. and Tom Cheshire and his wife Jan of Williamsville, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Samantha Cheshire of Ashland, Mo.; his mother-in-law, Mary Frank of Jefferson City, Mo.; six brothers-in-law, Steve Frank and his wife Jane, Tom Frank and his wife Debbie, Dick Frank, Harry Frank and his wife Lisa, Gerry Frank and his wife Sue, and Tim Frank and his wife Laura; six sisters-in-law, Madalynn Bell and her husband John, Nancy Schneider and her husband Gary, Sue Danner and her husband Jon, Gloria Wolfe and her husband Marc, Terese Molinere and her husband Tim, and Christy Miller and her husband Shawn; and numerous nieces, nephews, great- nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Elmer J. Frank; and a nephew, Mike Frank. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 3, 2016. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2016, in the Freeman Chapel with Chaplain Gary Gilmore officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Area 2, Retired Chapter of the MONGA.
