Beatrice Elizabeth "Bette" Oliver, 85, of Jefferson City, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Jefferson City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long struggle with dementia. She was born October 26, 1930, in St. Louis, Mo., the oldest child of the late Daniel and Bernice Beatrice (Bressler) Laster, and in 1949 graduated from Rocky Comfort High School in Rocky Comfort, Mo. On May 14, 1955, Bette and Calvin M. Oliver were married at Grace Lutheran Church in Wellsville, Mo. Calvin survives at their home. Bette worked for Southwestern Bell in St. Louis from 1950 to 1952 and in Sedalia, Mo., from 1955 to 1956. She had been a loving homemaker since 1956. Bette was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed embroidery, reading novels, watching old movies and had an extraordinary green thumb with every plant she touched. Her holiday stuffing was exceptional according to family members, who have yet to replicate it. But Bette's favorite thing to do was dote on her grandchildren. She and Calvin enjoyed long car trips together that took them through the lower 48 states. Along with her husband Calvin, Bette is survived by a son: Clayton (Amanda) Oliver of Rock Hill, Mo.; two daughters: Cheryl (Charley) Schaff of Menlo Park, Calif., and Carla (Lynn) Armstrong of Jefferson City; six grandchildren: Spencer and Ellie Oliver, Benjamin and Jonathan Schaff, Claire and Chloe Armstrong; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Hart, and brother, Glen Laster. Friends and family will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, May 23, 2016, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Samuel Powell officiating. Interment will follow in Wellsville Cemetery in Wellsville. Expressions of sympathy may be made through memorial gifts to the Alzheimer's Association Greater Missouri, 2400 Bluff Creek Drive, Columbia, MO 65201; or Trinity Lutheran School, 812 Stadium Blvd, Jefferson City, MO 65109.
