Reita Mae Hammond

Reita Mae Hammond (nee Riley), 93, of Versailles, Mo., passed away on Monday, May 9, 2016, from natural causes. She was a dedicated wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Reita was born in Marceline, Mo., to Owen Ettie Riley and Wilma West Riley (nee Phillips) on August 29, 1922. She graduated from Marceline High School in 1940. She married Jack Hammond on June 12, 1945, in Olathe, Kan. They made their home first in Gardner, Kan., and later in Olathe, Kan., Mount Freedom, N.J. and finally in Plano, Texas. The couple had four children: Patricia Ann, Sue Lynn, George Michael and Jeanette Marie. Reita was an active member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and National Society US Daughters of 1812. She was an avid seamstress, gardener and bird watcher. Survivors include: her sister, Betty Dutcher; her children, Patricia (Jerry) Spencer, Sue (Tim) Apgar, George (Maureen) Hammond and Jeanette (William) Brown; 8 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Reita was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2016, with funeral services following at 2 p.m. at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles, Mo. Burial will take place at the Versailles Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Spencer, William Brown, Matt Shatzman and Ken Davenport. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Daughters of the Confederacy scholarship fund in the care of Mrs. Larry Limpus at 19225 Albains Valley Drive, Wildwood, MO 63038-1739.
