Richard Stephen Groner

Richard Stephen Groner, 82 of Jefferson City, passed away Friday, May 6, 2016, at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital. He was born August 15, 1933, in Jefferson City to John H. and Lydia (Westerman) Groner. He was united in marriage on August 18, 1962, in Jefferson City to Joann Catherine Thrash, for 53 years, who survives at the home. Richard graduated valedictorian from St. Peter High School in 1951. He was a 1955 Cum Laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame and graduated from the University of Missouri, Rolla School of Mines, with a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering. During that time, he taught classes in engineering. Richard served with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, stationed in Newfoundland. Richard worked with the State of Missouri Highway Department, Bridge Division, Jefferson City, Missouri. He began Richard Groner, Consulting Engineers in 1963 and later it became Groner & Picker, Consulting Engineers. They sold it to Bartlett & West, Consulting Engineers in 1996. His career highlights included: Engineer of the Year in 1967, winning a national award for the Clarence Cannon Dam Water System, and was awarded the very first Energy Star building for the State of Missouri. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Holy Name Sodality of Immaculate Conception, Knights of Columbus, Immaculate Conception Endowment Board, Helias Catholic High School Board, Conception Seminary Parents Board, American Association of Professional Engineers, Jefferson City Engineers Club, Notre Dame Alumni Association, St. Mary's Hospital Finance Board, Cole County Judge, Eastern District, Jefferson City Council, Jefferson City Jaycees, Jefferson City Community Concert Association, and Friends of Cantorum. During his retirement, he loved gardening, breakfast with his friends to solve the world's problems, ice tea with lots of lemons, watching his grandchildren grow up, and continuing his land development ventures. He was proud of his Missouri Century Farm, Folk, Missouri. Other survivors include children, Cheryl (Jerry) Flickinger, Roswell, Georgia; Rev. Eric Groner, Fort Worth, Texas; Laurie (Rob) Honan, Kaiserslautern, Germany; Yvonne (Richard) Nelli, Atlanta, Georgia; and Kurt Groner, Jefferson City; seven grandchildren, Zachary Flickinger, Aubrey Flickinger, Althea Honan, Eleanor Honan, Sophia Honan, Ryan Nelli, Rachel Nelli; and two brothers, Bernard (Donna) Groner, Jefferson City and Rev. John Groner, St. Roberts, Missouri He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Henry Groner and Robert Groner. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Eric Groner, SVD, the Rev. John Groner, and the Rev. Donald Antweiler con-celebrating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
