C Stuart Exon

Dr. C. Stuart Exon, age 95 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died on Sunday, February 14, 2016, at St. Joseph's Bluffs. He was born November 13, 1920, in Chicago (Evanston), Illinois, a son of George E. and Carolyn Stuart Exon. Dr. Exon grew up in Wichita, Kansas where his father was a dentist and his mother a teacher, homemaker and church leader. He was married April 15, 1945, to Anne Lewis who survives at Heisinger. Dr. Exon graduated from Kansas University in 1941, received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1944, and served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for the duration of World War II. He received general and cancer surgery training at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He came to Jefferson City in 1951, to become an associate of Dr. Everett Sugarbaker at the Sugarbaker Clinic for Treatment of Cancer and Allied Diseases and later formed Jefferson City Surgeons where he practiced cancer and general surgery until his retirement in the late 1990's. Dr. Exon was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the American Cancer Society. He was dedicated to the support of Christian medical missions and hospitals around the world, spending significant volunteer time in teaching hospitals throughout Africa and Southeast Asia. For many years he was a surgical associate professor at the University of Missouri Medical School in Columbia and the Chief Surgeon at the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City. Survivors include: his wife of 70 years, Anne Exon; two children, Ellen Exon Burns and her husband Joe of Columbia, Mo. and Charles S. Exon II and his wife Marjorie of Irvine, California; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; brother, George E. Exon; and daughter, Carolan Exon Underwood. Visitation will be at Concord Baptist Church from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 18, 2016. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 18, 2016, at the Concord Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Monte Shinkle officiating.
