Norman William Wood

Norman William Wood, 93, of California, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, in Jefferson City, Mo. He was born February 6, 1922, Lupus, Mo., to Gilbert Wood and Lillie Coots Wood who both preceded him in death. Norman attended 7th grade at Jamestown before joining the Navy. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman First Class, SV6 USNR from April 1944- April 1946. Norman was married to Ruth Lorene Miller. Norman owned the shell station in California for 10 years, worked at the woolen mill in California, Dept. of Corrections as a correction officer, worked for Empire Gas as a plant manager before retiring, also installed underground cable in the state of Kansas. Norman loved to camp and fish on the Missouri River, drove race cars and attended all Sunday night sprint car races at Double XX Speedway, also loves to quail and pheasant hunt. He loved to go dancing on Saturday nights. He enjoyed making homemade pies and tending to his garden, especially canning beets. Norman was a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church. He was a member of the California VFW, California Eagles 4027, and enjoyed watching his grandson compete in mini sprint car racing. Survivors include one son, Troy Wood and friend Linda, of Jefferson City, Mo.; one daughter, Inajo Fairchild and husband John Wayne, of California, Mo.; four grandchildren, Marlo Bolinger, J.W. Fairchild, Cecilia Peterson, and Brian Wood, all of California, Mo.; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Pauline Medlin, Mary Shelton, Lois Jenkins, all of California, Stella Henning, Lebanon, Mo. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Wood, Clyde Wood, and two great-grandsons. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 28, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church in California, Mo. A Mass of Christian burial celebrating Norman's life will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 11:00 a.m. at the Annunciation Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Tony Rinaldo. Burial with military honors will be in the California City Cemetery in California. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to be made to the Hospice Compassus, c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, 100 S. Oak, California, MO 65018.
