Sylvia I. Vernon

Sylvia I. Vernon, 83, of Eldon, Missouri, passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at Eldon Nursing and Rehab in Eldon, Missouri. She was born November 20, 1931 in Ulman, Missouri, the daughter of the late Harland and Jewel (Horton) Phillips. On August 7, 1950 in Harrison, Arkansas, she was united in marriage to Clark Vernon who survives at the home. Sylvia was a past member of DAR, a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Eldon, Mo., serving as Sunday school teacher, a hostess for many dinners and active in many church activities, and most recently was a member of the Aurora Springs Baptist Church. She was co-owner of the Eldon Daylight Donut Shop for 26 year before retiring. Sylvia was a lifelong member of the Eldon community. She enjoyed cooking, quilting and she was an avid gardener. She loved spending time with her husband of 65 years and her family. Other survivors include: son, Kevin Vernon (Debbie Johnson) of Jefferson City, Mo.; four grandchildren, Kimberly Hill (Nathan), Kyle Vernon (Trisha), Kathleen Ochs (Kevin), and Kenneth Vernon (Kathleen); two step-grandchildren, Derrik and Desiree; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Ialeen Duncan of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; brothers, Walter Phillips (Beverly) of Des Moines, Iowa, and Harold Phillips of Carlisle, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers, James, Victor "Max", and Lonnie Phillips preceded her in death. Visitation will be Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Aurora Springs Baptist Church with the funeral service beginning at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Eldon City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Aurora Springs Baptist Church of Eldon, Mo. Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon, Mo.
