Edward H. Schnitzler

Edward H. Schnitzler, age 101, of Monroe City and formerly of Linn, Mo., passed away Sunday, August 2, 2015, at the Monroe City Manor Care Center. He was born on January 4, 1914, the eldest son of Peter and Anna Schnitzler in Luystown, Mo. He married Wilma Kuster on August 3, 1935 in Jefferson City, Mo. She preceded him in death on August 12, 2003. Ed attended elementary schools at Forest Grove and St. George in Linn, and Linn High School in Linn, Mo. Ed joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1932 and was sent to a CCC camp in Duluth, Minn. In 1934, he enrolled in Chillicothe Business College. Ed established Schnitzler Tax Service in Linn and also farmed. He was elected Circuit Clerk and Recorder of Osage County in 1952 where he served four terms. He also worked for the state highway department in Kirkwood, Mo. until he retired. During that time they lived in Kirkwood and they moved to Monroe City in 1998. Ed was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He was one of the founders and the first Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council in Linn. He was a great supporter of the Monroe City Senior Nutrition where he enjoyed lunch daily for many years and also enjoyed games of cards with his friends. That is where he obtained the nickname "Mr. Ed". Survivors include four sons: Edward Schnitzler Jr. and his wife Wonda of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla., James Schnitzler and his wife Janice of Monroe City, Mo., Joe Schnitzler and his wife Yvonne of Festus, Mo., and Guy Schnitzler and his wife Donna of Jefferson City, Mo.; two daughters: Dixie Muckensturn and her husband Charles of Wildwood, Mo., and Mary Poelker and her husband Keith of Monroe City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren: Edward III, Eric, Elston, Michael, Jason, Timothy Schnitzler and James Bommel, all of the St. Louis area, Jonathon and Lauren Schnitzler of Jefferson City, Ryan Jopling of Washington, Mo., Michelle Reinheimer of Frisco, Texas, and Mary Kendrick and Elizabeth Reyers of Monroe City, Mo.; 31 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jane Herndon of Linn; a sister-in-law, Mariam Kuster of Jefferson City, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Mark Schnitzler; one granddaughter, Katie Jopling; three brothers, Hubert, Nelson and Jack Schnitzler; and one sister, Sylvia Cavanaugh. A concelebrated Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 6, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Fr. Michael Penn and Msgr. Michael Flannigan will officiate. Graveside services will be at St. George Cemetery in Linn, Mo. at 2 p.m. Ed's grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 5, from 4-7 p.m. at the Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City. Memorials may be made to the Monroe City Senior Nutrition Center.
