Geneva Pauline (Sooter) Varnell, 91, of Eugene, Missouri, passed away Friday, September 27, 2013, at the Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility in Jefferson City, Missouri. She was born December 15, 1921, in Kansas City, Kansas, a daughter of the late Rev. Mark and Lena (Burke) Sooter. On September 2, 1956, Geneva was united in marriage at her parents home in Eldon, Missouri, to Raymond Henry Varnell, who survives. Geneva worked as a Registered Nurse for many years at Charles E. Still Hospital in Jefferson City, and also at the Tuscumbia Hospital. She retired in 1984 after many years of dedicated service to her patients. She was a member of the Christian Faith. Geneva loved to crochet, and she adored her dogs, who were like her children. Most of all, she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Along with her husband Raymond, Geneva is also survived by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Jesse Hentges (husband Randy) and their children Kadence, Hunter and Harper Hentges of Jefferson City, Missouri; Josh Varnell (wife Nicole) of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Rachael Fielder (husband Ian) and their child Elyse Fielder of Ft. Benning, Georgia; one sister: Rayma Nixdorf (husband Bob) of Iberia, Missouri; and one brother: Mark Sooter Jr. (wife Katie) of Eldon, Missouri. Geneva was also preceded in death by four sons: Mickey Ray Varnell, Terry Varnell, Kenneth Varnell, and Mark Varnell; and one sister: Lorraine Whittaker. Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 30, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where a Prayer Service will be held at 4:30 p.m., with Deacon Steve Kliethermes officiating. Graveside Services for the family will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at the Mount Zion Cemetery near Tuscumbia, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer Association or to the Family of Geneva Varnell.
