Virginia May Payne, 87, of Jefferson City, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Summit Villa Care Center. She was born June 25, 1925, in Walnut Shade, Missouri, a daughter of the late Henry Thurston and Lella (Wood) Melton. On January 20, 1945, she was united in marriage to Harold Payne, who preceded her in death on November 8, 1998. Virginia attended Jefferson City High School. She was employed with J.C. Penney and Singer Sewing Center, both in downtown Jefferson City, where she sold fabric. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed sewing, fishing, gardening, reading, birds, playing cards (pitch), dominoes and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter: Linda (Ed) Tremain of Holts Summit; one daughter-in-law: Terri (Wendell) Mitchell of Jefferson City; four grandchildren: Shelly (Mike) Hittner of St. Martins; Cindy (Russ) Scott of Columbia; Mike (Misty) Payne of Olathe, Kansas and Trent (Emily) Tremain of Connersville, Indiana; six great-grandchildren and one on the way. She was preceded in death by one son: Thomas Melton Payne; and two sisters: Ruby Sohn and Georgia Tinker. Friends will be received from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 4, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Don Carter officiating. Interment will follow in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to First Christian Church or Summit Villa Care Center.
