George Oscar Schupp, 78, of Jefferson City, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, surrounded by his family and his dogs, Chrissy and Claire. George's death came after several years of struggling with Alzheimer's. George was born on January 11, 1935, in West Plains, Mo., the third child of Oscar George Schupp and Esther Stanley, whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Schupp. George's wife, Janice Gail Fay Schupp, preceded him in death on August 16, 2010. George was a life-long resident of Jefferson City after moving to Jefferson City in the 1940s. George earned the prestigious Eagle Scout. George graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1953. George lettered in football, track, baseball and basketball at Jefferson City High School. George's skills as on offensive guard in high school allowed him to continue to play football in college at Central Missouri State University, however he seemed especially proud of the fact that he lettered in basketball even though he was mainly on the practice squad. During his college years, George served in the National Guard from 1953 through 1956. In 1957, George entered active duty Army and served honorably until 1959. While stationed at Killeen Base, Texas near Fort Hood, George was a specialist in military ammunition supply and storage. Although George did not know it at the time, this was one of the United States' first National Stockpile Sites for nuclear weapons commonly known as "Site Baker." Following his time in the service, George worked various jobs around Jefferson City. Many local residents remember George as the co-owner and primary operator of the once popular Randazzo Park-In Liquor Store in Cedar City. George also served as Mayor of Cedar City. After his retirement, George became active in volunteer activities, including AARP and the Salvation Army Thrift Store. On October 4, 1986, (on the feast of St. Francis) George married Janice Fay. George loved Jan tremendously and would listen to her for hours on end as Jan would discuss her relentless pursuit of issues involving end-of-life care. In George's step-children's eyes, this is what made George particularly special! While many knew George as a people person, he was also a big lover of animals. In fact, his two surviving dogs were at his bedside when he passed. Even as George's memory faded to only the most familiar memories of his childhood, he still frequently asked for his two "kids," his dogs. George was a great cook. He also loved playing golf (member at Meadow Lake for many years), enjoyed camping, watching sports on TV (mainly the Cardinals and Mizzou football and basketball), doing "handyman" projects (many of which were at the behest of his wife) and gardening. George is survived by his sister, Mary Edna Nower, four step-children, Charlotte McDonough and family (husband Mike and children, Tim and Kaitlyn), Brenda Fife and family (husband Matt and children, Will and Beth), Rich Murray and family (wife Carla and children, Samantha and Jada) and David Murray; niece and nephews, and many others. Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City and visitation time with family will be from 12:00 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park pavilion, across the street from the Cathedral. The celebrant will be Father Dylan Schrader. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to The Alzheimer's Association or The Salvation Army.
