Harry Woodrow Schanuth

Harry "Whistler" Woodrow Schanuth, 93, of Jefferson City, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born July 19, 1919, in Callaway County, the son of the late Charles O. and Grace Gilmore Schanuth. On May 31, 1940, he was united in marriage to Ruby Owens who preceded him in death. On July 10, 1948, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Sanning, she survives at the home. Harry attended Halifax Grade School. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1941 -1945, where he was in the Philippines and Japan. Harry was employed with Union Pacific Railroad from 1941-1979. He enjoyed fishing, walking and Traveling. He was a member of the VFW - Post 1003 and the Railroad Retirement Club. Along with his wife, Harry is survived by six children: Harry Jr. and Barbara Schanuth of Jefferson City, Donnie Schanuth and MaryAnne Backues of Louisburg, Kansas, Roger and Tammy Schanuth of Jefferson City, James and Harriett Paulsen of Paola, Kansas, Edmund and Patsy Grefrath of Jefferson City and Robert and Dorothy Jean Stegeman of St. Martin; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother: Kenneth and Judy Schanuth of Redding, California and one sister: Marchetta Sneed of Independence. He was preceded in death by nine siblings: Richard, Robert, Nadine, Della, Calvin, Charlie, Gracie Ellen, Paul and Curt; and one great-grandson: Bradyn Thomas Schanuth on October 21, 2010. Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2012, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 at the funeral home with Rev. Brian Hedges officiating. Interment will follow in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Preferred Hospice, 1900 N. Providence Road Suite 31, Columbia, Missouri 65202.
