Leroy Alvin Jacobs, 70, of Jefferson City, died peacefully Sunday, October 24, 2010, at his home after a long illness. He was born October 21, 1940, in Osage Bend, a son of Arthur George and Helen Lauf Samson. He attended St. Peter's Catholic School in Jefferson City and was a 1958 graduate of Jefferson City High School. Leroy was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1960 to 1964. He served on the USS Fulton submarine tender. In 1970, he was united in marriage to Sallie Rae Moses, who survives in Jefferson City. Leroy was a firefighter. He started his career with the Joplin Fire Department before serving 27 years with the Jefferson City Fire Department until his retirement in 1994. On his days off, Leroy worked for United Steel Erectors for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5 and the National Rifle Association. Leroy enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, doing carpentry work, painting, and maintaining his yard, as well as those of his neighbors. He especially enjoyed working and being on the family farm, as well as spending time with his grandchildren. He is also survived by one son, Steve Jacobs and wife Shelle of Koeltztown; one daughter, Leigh Ann Stokes and husband Randy of Jefferson City; one step-daughter, Julie Engelbrecht and husband Michael of Eugene; two grandsons, Cody and Alex Jacobs; and two step-grandchildren, Jesse and Hannah Engelbrecht. Friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 28, 2010, at the Jacobs' home, 202 Haaf Drive. Private family graveside services with military honors will be held in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery at Taos. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the National Emphysema Foundation.
