Flavian Volmert

Flavian John Volmert, age 89, formerly of St. Anthony, passed away at his home on Monday, October 18, 2021, in Centertown. He was born to the late Frank and Catherine (Jurgensmeyer) Volmert on January 23, 1932, in St. Elizabeth. He was the third child of five siblings. In March of 1952, Flavian entered the Army and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1960 from the Army Reserves. On October 1, 1955, Flavian was united in marriage to Jean Engetschwiler in St. Elizabeth. In 1960, they moved from Eldon to St. Anthony and faithfully attended St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church for over 60 years. Flavian worked in Eldon both as a Ford tractor mechanic and tool and die machinist. Later Flavian operated a repair business out of his shop in St. Anthony. Flavian was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He had a big smile and a great memory for the people he met in his life. He was a gifted mechanic, known for his abilities to solve and fix many types of machinery, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Flavian was selected as a contestant on the Price is Right in 1986. In 1989, Flavian and Jean purchased and modernized the St. Anthony Store where they sold gas, food, and feed. They sold the store after retiring in 1996. Flavian's hobbies included restoring a 1959, Ford Offset Tractor and a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and working on their farm. In 2016, Flavian and Jean moved to Columbia and returned to St. Anthony in 2017. Flavian and Jean moved to Centertown in the spring of 2021. Flavian is survived by his wife, Jean of 66 years; their six children, Joseph Volmert and wife Lindalee of Columbia, Sharon Procter of Centertown and the late Alan Procter, Ruth Gardner and husband Doug of Bluffton, S.C., Judy Volmert and husband David Phillips of Snohomish, Wash., John Volmert and wife Wendy of Goose Creek, S.C., and James Volmert and wife Catherine of Columbia; nine grandchildren, Mandy Garner (Mark Landrum), Jacob Procter, Zachary Volmert, Rachel Volmert, Travis Volmert, Mitchell Volmert, Adam Phillips, Mike Volmert, and Haley Volmert; siblings, Marilyn Otto and Raymond Volmert; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Stroyick and Lorraine Kliethermes. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with a rosary at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, October 21, at St. Anthony Parish Hall. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 22, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Fr. William Korte officiating. Interment will be held in St. Anthony Cemetery.
