John Frederick Allan, 84, of Jefferson City, finished his race on Saturday, February 15, 2020, and now rests in his eternal home. He was born on August 24, 1935, in Niagara Falls, New York, a son of Howard C. and Flora H. (Schoenherr) Allan, who preceded him in death. John was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls. He was married December 21, 1957, at Faith Lutheran Church in Jefferson City, to Nancee J. Kaufmann, who survives at the home. John attended the Niagara Falls Public Schools, graduating from LaSalle High School in 1953. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Concordia University in Chicago, Illinois in 1957, a Master of Arts degree in Education from the University of Michigan in 1964, and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1971. John served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry officer from 1957 to 1960 and subsequently served as a Captain in the Marine Corps Reserves. John was a Minister of Christian Education at St. James Lutheran Church in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. He was a history teacher and basketball coach at Detroit Lutheran East High School. John was an elementary teacher in the Public School District of Grosse Pointe, Michigan. In 1964, he became the principal of South Elementary School in Jefferson City. In 1966, he was employed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education where he served as a supervisor of Title I ESEA, an assistant director of Title III ESEA, a director of Planning and Evaluation, a coordinator of Management Information Services, and an assistant commissioner of Special Education. John was chairman of the National Committee of Evaluation and Information Systems of the Council of Chief State School Officers. He served as an educational consultant for 12 state departments of education and Drury College and retired in 1995. John was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where he was a teacher in the Sunday school and the week day school, served on the board of elders, board of trustees, building committee, anniversary committee and endowment fund board. He enjoyed raising cattle, gardening, reading history and discussing current events. Other survivors include two sons: Gavin S. (Karen) Allan of Jefferson City and Darin J. Allan of San Francisco, California; one daughter: Kristin A. (Kenneth) Tipton of New Bloomfield; one brother: Rev. Kenneth H. Allan (Jan) of Portage, Michigan; two step-grandsons: David Fuhr of Jefferson City and Aidan Tipton of Holland, Michigan; and six nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2020, at Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Eric Gledhill. Interment with full military honors will follow in Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, The Samaritan Center or the Jefferson City Salvation Army.
