Osage's Cordia wins in first round of girls tournament

COLUMBIA - School of the Osage's Abbey Cordia was the lone area first-round winner Thursday in the girls state wrestling championships at Mizzou Arena.

Cordia, a returning state medalist, won by fall in 1:22 against Battle's Amara Reichert, improving her career record at state to 6-1.

Cordia (37-3) will face Fort Osage's Haley Ward (33-0) in the quarterfinals, which start at 11:45 a.m. today.

Eldon's Olivia Chapman finished 1-1 on Day 1. After losing a 2-0 decision to St. Clair's Makayla Johnson, Chapman won by fall in 4:11 against Staley's Madison Schmude in the first-round wrestlebacks to keep her state tournament going.

Versailles' Alana May also went 1-1 at 235. She won by fall in 1:40 against Eureka's Mari Lopez in the first-round wrestlebacks after suffering a first-round pin to Francis Howell's Ronesha Poke.

Also wrestling at 235 was Tipton's Kyla Cornine, who posted a 1-1 record. She lost by fall to Fulton's Ryli Arney in the first round, then won by fall in 1:35 against Mehlville's Samantha Apple in the first-round wrestlebacks.

Lilly Burns of Tipton finished 0-2 at 187, losing both matches by fall.
