The Calvary Lutheran Lady Lions wanted to work on their transition offense Tuesday night. Their defense allowed that to happen.

Calvary scored 16 points off steals in just the first quarter on its way to a 64-5 victory against the Columbia Independent Lady Lions at home.

"That's kind of why we started in man, to kind of put the pressure on and see if we get some steals and some quick easy shots at first," Calvary coach Hannah Matthews said.

Calvary Lutheran scored the game's first 18 points, 14 from freshman Sydney Morris.

Morris stole the ball away on the game's first possession and scored a second-chance basket at the other end.

An Izzy Chilambo steal followed by a Morris layup made it 10-0 two minutes into the game.

About a minute later, Baileigh Morris got her hands on a Columbia Independent pass and got the ball to Sydney Morris for a layup and a 16-0 lead.

A Rachel Thompson steal and Baileigh Morris layup capped the 18-0 run midway through the opening quarter.

Chilambo finished off the first-quarter scoring with a steal and layup for a 25-1 lead.

Columbia Independent got its first bucket two minutes into the second quarter when Alaina Morrissey made a jumper.

Calvary Lutheran then scored the game's next 10 points, capped by a Thompson steal and Chilambo layup for a 37-3 lead.

Calvary led 37-5 at halftime.

Chloe Baker splashed home a jumper and added a three-point play late in the third quarter for a 56-5 lead.

Sydney Morris scored a layup in the final 30 seconds on the third quarter for a 60-5 margin.

"When we got up I just told the girls, 'Hey, keep rebounding, keep doing your defense and then let's pull it out and run some offense and get some good shots,'" Matthews said.

Sydney Morris finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, Chilambo had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Thompson tallied nine points.

All seven Calvary players that entered the game scored.

"I feel like over the last several days in practice and this game we've worked better as a team and our points have been distributed more evenly than they were the first couple games this season," Matthews said. "That was really nice to see."

Calvary (1-3) will be back on the court Monday when it hosts Belle.
