Lincoln's Fletcher wins MIAA track and field men's high point honor

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Lincoln freshman Shemar Fletcher won the MIAA men's high point honor Sunday on the final day of the MIAA outdoor track and field championships at Pittsburg State.

Fletcher won individual titles in the men's 100- and 200-meter dashes, and he also helped the Blue Tigers to a pair of third-place finishes in relays to win the honor.

Fletcher won the 100 final in a time of 10.45 seconds after qualifying sixth in the preliminaries. He also claimed the title in the 200 final with a time of 21.13 seconds after placing third in the preliminaries.

In the 4x100-meter relay, Fletcher, Kizan David, Leonardo Stewart and Reuben Nichols had a third-place time of 41.27 seconds. In the 4x400-meter relay, Fletcher, Nichols, Shanthamoi Brown and Kewani Campbell also took third in 3:13.34 to finish the meet.

Those four events accounted for 32 of Lincoln's 86 team points, putting the Blue Tigers in fourth place in the men's final team standings. Pittsburg State won the men's team title with 172.5 points, followed by Missouri Southern (137) in second and Central Missouri (105.5) in third.

Missouri Southern won the women's title with 145 points, while Central Missouri was runner-up with 129 points and Pittsburg State was third with 93. Lincoln placed sixth out of 11 team on the women's side with 81 points, seventh behind Northwest Missouri and three back of Fort Hays State.

Lincoln boasted a total of six MIAA event titles during the weekend.

The Lincoln men had the top-three finishers in the 400-meter hurdles final. Kewani Campbell won the race in 52.52 seconds, while Brown was second in 52.71 seconds and Rashane Bartlett was third in 53.10.

Jahnaza Francis was eighth in the 400 hurdles in 57.55 seconds, giving Lincoln 25 points from that one event toward the team standings.

David added a first-place finish in the men's long jump with a leap of 25 feet, 10.75 inches, breaking a stadium record at Pittsburg State and coming up a quarter of an inch shy of Ryan Brown's MIAA championship record.

On the women's side, Maria Diamond made it a clean sweep in the 400 hurdles, winning with a time of 59.01 seconds, which also broke a stadium record.

Diamond, Kimone Campbell, Chrissani May and Jameaka Mannings won the women's 4x400 relay with a time of 3:43.02, breaking another stadium record.

Lincoln finished runner-up in five events at the conference meet.

On the men's side, in addition to the 400 hurdles, Lincoln placed second in the 100 final, as Stewart posted a runner-up time of 10.57 seconds.

Rene Medley took second in the women's 100 final in 11.68 seconds, while Mannings was runner-up behind Diamond in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.45. The Blue Tigers also placed second in the women's 4x100, as Vivian Akunna, Medley, Danneika Lyn and Aliyah George clocked a time of 47.22 seconds.

Also reaching the podium for the Lincoln women was May, who placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.11. Kimone Campbell was fourth in 2:12.52 and Kelly-Ann Beckford was eighth in 2:36.33.

The Lincoln women had multiple top-eight finishers in five events.

In addition to the 400 hurdles and the 800, the Blue Tigers had Medley finish fifth in the 200 (24.43 seconds) and George finish seventh (24.95 seconds). In the 400-meter dash, Mannings was fourth in 56.09 seconds, followed by George in fifth in 56.64 seconds. Lyn joined Medley in the top eight in the 100, placing fifth in 12.05 seconds.

Also scoring points for the Lincoln women were Akunna, who was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.36 seconds), and Melissa Tyme, who was seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:35.45).

Rounding out the scoring for the Lincoln men were Bartlett, who was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.64 seconds); Nichols, who was sixth in the 400 (49.00 seconds); and David, who was sixth in the triple jump (47-6.5).

Lincoln finished the two-day conference meet with 12 provisional times for the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field national championships, which will be May 28-30 at Allendale, Mich. The only automatic-qualifying mark was David's finish in the men's long jump, which ranks No. 1 nationally in Division II.

Missouri Southern freshman Brendan Rozier (Jefferson City High School) took fifth place in the men's javelin with a personal-best throw of 223-2, a provisional mark for the Division II national championships.

Missouri Southern freshman Mason York (Jefferson City High School) placed sixth in the men's pole vault, clearing a personal-best height of 16-0, which is also a provisional mark for the Division II national championships.

Central Missouri freshman Adam McCauley (Blair Oaks High School) helped the Mules to a seventh-place finish in the men's 4x400 with a time of 3:19.50. Individually, McCauley was 30th in the 800 with a time of 2:08.11.

Central Missouri junior Baylie Bellin (Blair Oaks High School) finished 12th in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 155-10.
