Our Opinion: Exercise, beat the heat

Want to keep your body moving during the sweltering summer months, but don't have a gym membership?

You still have options. One of them is to walk at Capital Mall.

The mall has long welcomed "mall walkers" - "people of all ages and fitness levels who enjoy staying healthy by walking the mall in a climate-controlled environment," as the mall describes them.

The mall doors are open 11 a.m. MondaySaturday and noon Sunday. Walking around the entire mall one time is two-thirds of a mile.

The mall just asks that walkers follow guidelines for social distancing and not to enter the mall when they are sick.

One program that could get you started is the Arthritis Foundation's Walk With Ease program, which will be offered inside Capital Mall in July and August.

Whether you're looking for relief from arthritis pain or just want to be more active, the program demonstrates how to make physical activity part of everyday life. As we recently reported, the program is open to everyone, regardless of faith, culture or situation.

Arthritis Foundation-certified leaders teach the free classes, which will take place 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, July 13-Aug. 20, inside the mall, 3600 Country Club Drive in Jefferson City.

Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri is again offering the six-week program, which lets participants walk at their own pace three to six times weekly.

The program is proven to reduce the pain of arthritis and improve overall health. It also increases balance, strength and walking pace, while building confidence in your ability to be physically active.

Reserve a space by calling 660-349-8881 or 573-635-7719.

It's easy to get off track with your exercise program during the summer months, especially when the heat and humidity are oppressive. But it's important to stay active.

We would encourage you to consider incorporating walking at the mall into your routine. You'll likely see people there you know, and it also will encourage you to shop local at the same time.
