Your Opinion: Changing mindset needed to address domestic violence

Dear Editor:

I appreciate the fact that you are addressing domestic violence in your editorial, particularly in light of the fact that there was a current incident of domestic violence reported in today's paper. However, you missed the mark on the action that should be taken.

More gun control will not cure domestic violence. Changing the mindset of males toward females will. Statistics show that the domestic violence that occurs is overwhelmingly male against female. Therefore, it is at a very basic human level that change must occur. Until females are no longer considered inferior beings to males, or considered male property, or considered extensions of male egos, or whatever else that demeans females, there will be violence against females.

Why don't we have strict laws where the abusers must go for some kind of counseling or sensitivity training? Just fining or jailing these abusers will not cure the problem. There should also be counseling for the victims of this violence. Those are the actions that should be taken.
