Your Opinion: Sports teams haven't disparaged Africa, Native Americans

Dear Editor:

No African American should miss the fact that not a single American sports team has ever defiled the reputation of Africa by taking a name that suggests white respect for anything African. Native Americans, which became known to the world as Indians through the machinations of history, have been made to endure the memorialization of their perceived courage and intelligence in the names of favorite American sports teams. Many American states and rivers also bear Indian names, but not a single such name dishonors the sanctity of anything African, so Black Americans can feel fortunate at having been spared the shame of white admiration, and I can't blame my Indian compatriots for being mad as hell.
