Our Opinion: Prepare for winter, hope for spring

It's late January, and we can see the light at the end of the winter weather tunnel. But we're not there yet.

As we write this, another mixed-precipitation event is being forecast. MoDOT advises it brings the "potential for a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, snow, and rain mixed with snow throughout the day and into Friday."

Much of it could have fallen by the time you read this.

But, as Forrest Gump might say: Missouri weather is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get.

So we urge you to use caution on the roads. Buckle up, and put your phone down.

MoDOT is asking motorists to remain vigilant and keep informed of quickly changing weather conditions.

A MoDOT news release advises: "With the intermittent periods of liquid and freezing precipitation throughout the day, motorists might become complacent about their safety and assume roads are only wet. Be advised that the transition from rain to ice may come quickly and without warning, creating hazardous road conditions in a matter of seconds. Use caution through the duration of this winter event and don't drive distracted."

When "wintry mixes" occur, it's not effective for road crews to pretreat the roads, since rain could wash off salt or other chemicals before they could be effective.

It only takes a small amount of ice to cause a wreck, so we ask you to drive cautiously and defensively. If the roads are bad, stay off them if you can.

To check road conditions, go to MoDOT's Traveler Information Map at traveler.modot.org/map/. The map is also available as a free app for Apple and Android devices.

Let's watch out for each other during nasty winter weather. Your attention and caution will keep both you and your fellow motorist safe. And if you do see roadside motorists who may need assistance, be a good Samaritan and offer to lend them a hand.
