Your Opinion: Smart phones not so smart

Dear Editor:

In some states there are laws of no texting while driving. Well, let me tell you something. That law does absolutely nothing. I have seen vehicles weaving all over the road. Want to know why??

I will tell you why! When I get close enough to look down at what the driver is doing, guess what they are doing? That's right, the phone is in their lap and they are texting while driving 70 mph down the interstate.

If they can develop a technology that prevents someone who has had a DWI from driving if they had been drinking - a device that will prevent the car from starting once they breathe into it - then why can't the developers of these so-called smartphones develop a technology that will prevent the telephone from texting while the vehicle is in motion or the person is sitting in the driver's seat?

I wonder how many of the deaths in vehicle accidents were that were caused by the driver texting and not giving the road their full attention could have been prevented by a new technology to prevent texting while driving? So how about it! Smartphone developers put your thinking caps on and come up with a real life-saving device!

Our legislators should pass a law, one that is strictly enforced about this. Not just a law on paper that is not enforced nor obeyed by law enforcement.
