Your Opinion: SSM sale to MU opposed

Dear Editor:

The sale of SSM, official name of St. Mary's Hospital, to Missouri University Health should be opposed as an egregious invasion of the State of Missouri taking over privately owned businesses.

Worthy of note: St. Mary's Hospital was planned and built to house a ward for legally confined prisoners, but that ward has been transferred to MU Health some years ago. Jefferson City is home to state inmate correctional facilities.

SSM, officially Sisters of St Mary, touts on their website their hospital has been in "the Capitol City" for about 160 years.

SSM operates eight hospitals in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area (SLMA) and is building another.
