JC man charged with stealing thousands from business

A Jefferson City man is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a local business.

Christopher Bagsby, 31, is charged with one count of felony stealing.

The incident occurred at the Chipotle restaurant on Missouri Boulevard, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

A witness said she received a text message that Bagsby was going to quit. The witness said she later found three deposits and $1,800 in cash were missing.

The witness told investigators that she called Bagsby after she got the message from him. She claims Bagsby told her the money had been missing from the store's safe and he was using his personal money to balance it out. The witness also claimed Bagsby said he switched deposits around to make up Chipotle deposits to reflect their sales.

Bagsby quit June 1, and store video reportedly shows Bagsby grabbing a "wad" of cash from the store safe and placing it on his person. Authorities said the video also shows Bagsby leaving the store without returning the money to the safe. According to the witness, more than $3,300 was missing from the safe.

Bagsby was called and voluntarily came to the Police Department, where, investigators said, he told them money from the store went missing on a shift before his sometime in January 2020. He reportedly did not call police, but instead began to put personal money in the safe and use deposits from certain days to balance out store deposits that were being taken to the bank. Bagsby allegedly said he put personal money in the deposit "many times" and could not give an approximate total amount. He also reportedly said he would have to take his money out to pay bills.
