Kansas Street reopens following road improvements

Kansas Street has reopened with the addition of Jefferson City's first speed table to control traffic in front of Washington Park Ice Arena.

The road closed in mid-November to allow for construction of the speed table, which is part of a set of improvements for the area.

Speed tables are a wider alternative to the traditional speed bump many drivers are familiar with. The table is wide enough that it raises the entire wheelbase of a vehicle in an effort to calm vehicle speed in an area that gets a high volume of pedestrian traffic.

JC Parks Assistant Director JJ Gates said work is not yet complete on the entire project, but they don't anticipate any more long-term road closures for Kansas Street. The road may need to be closed for a day or two to complete street markings on the new construction.

The project also includes two button-controlled and signaled crosswalks with overhead lighting to bracket the speed table. Gates said that is set to be installed later this month.

Crews have also started working on security lighting for the parking lot nearby, and around 80 bollard lights will be placed along the greenway starting at Lions Field and continuing east to Ohio Street.

Gates anticipates the project being completed within the next month, as long as weather cooperates.

During work, parts of the Vivion Field parking lot may be used for equipment. JC Parks encourages ice arena patrons to use the north parking lot during renovations.
