Jefferson City will host a dedication for the bridge to Adrian's Island on Monday as part of its bicentennial celebration.

The event will be at 2 p.m. on the state Capitol grounds near the Veterans Memorial.

Work on the $4.5 million bridge, which will stretch from near the Capitol to Adrian's Island, began in February.

The bridge will not be complete Monday, but workers have about half of the span completed.

They still need to install a 169-foot piece over the railroad tracks, which was supposed to go in last week but was delayed due to the need for bigger equipment.

They also need to install smaller pieces bringing the bridge up to the landing spot on the Capitol grounds. Otherwise it still needs guard rails and other safety pieces.

Mayor Carrie Tergin said, "The Bicentennial Bridge has generated much anticipation and excitement, and it is fitting to celebrate the progress during Missouri's Bicentennial celebration with a preview and update on the exciting project to be completed this fall, which will connect Jefferson City with the Missouri riverfront and Adrian's Island."

Adrian's Island is an area of about 30 acres of wetland and woods between the Missouri River and the railroad, running about a mile from the Capitol to the Missouri State Penitentiary.

Although it is called an island, it is only separated from the "mainland" by the railroad tracks.
