Hearing to set officials' salaries on tap today

There's a public hearing this afternoon in Jefferson City by the commission charged with setting the salaries for all elected state officials, all members of the General Assembly and all judges, except municipal judges.

The Missouri Citizens' Commission on Compensation for Elected Officials' meeting from 3-4 p.m. today in Suite 430 of the Harry S. Truman Building will also be remotely accessible by phone and video, and the public may offer comment.

Members of the public who physically go to the Truman Building for the meeting will also join the hearing on a phone made available for that purpose, according to the Office of Administration - commission members will join the call remotely.

The commission must issue its salary recommendations by Dec. 1, and the salary schedule becomes effective unless disapproved by the General Assembly by Feb. 1, 2021.

The following are the gross pays in the 2019 calendar year for the listed officials, according to the Missouri Accountability Portal:

  • Gov. Mike Parson: $133,820.88.
  • Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe: $86,484.
  • Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft: $107,745.84.
  • State Auditor Nicole Galloway: $107,745.84.
  • State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick: $99,172.74. (not including $2,359 as a state representative)
  • Attorney General Eric Schmitt: $110,790.35. (not including $5,225.16 as state treasurer)

Schmitt was previously state treasurer, but was appointed attorney general, and Fitzpatrick was appointed to succeed him.

According to state law, Missouri lawmakers earn $18,078 a year, not including salary adjustments made each year. Senators and representatives also earn a weekly mileage allowance for certain travel.

The speaker of the House of Representatives and president pro tem of the Senate each receive an additional annual compensation of $2,500, and the speaker pro tem of the House and majority and minority floor leaders of the House and Senate each receive an additional $1,500 a year.

Last year, Speaker of the House Elijah Haahr, R-Springfield, earned a total of $38,373.44.

Senate President Pro Tem Dave Schatz, R-Sullivan, earned a total of $38,310.71.

House Speaker Pro Tem John Wiemann, R-O'Fallon, earned a total of $37,352.53

House Majority Floor Leader Rob Vescovo, R-Arnold, earned a total of $37,415.03.

House Minority Floor Leader Crystal Quade, D-Springfield, earned a total of $37,352.53.

Senate Majority Floor Leader Caleb Rowden, R-Columbia, earned a total of $37,352.30.

Then-Senate Minority Floor Leader Gina Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors, earned a total of $37,414.80. Sen. John Rizzo, D-Independence, is the minority floor leader this year.

According to the State Constitution, "All judges shall receive as salary the total amount of their present compensation until otherwise provided by law, but no judge's salary shall be diminished during his term of office," and judges may also receive "reasonable traveling and other expenses allowed by law."
