Maries County re-elects Heitman as sheriff

Maries County voters re-elected Sheriff Chris Heitman for another term Tuesday.

Of 6,208 registered voters in the county, 4,801 voted.

Heitman, the Republican candidate, received 3,119 votes out of 4,742, about 65 percent of the vote.

Democrat Buddy Thompson received 1,623 votes, about 35 percent of the vote. Eight votes were cast for write-in candidates.

Heitman has been Maries County sheriff for 12 years. The position is not term limited.

Prior to first being elected sheriff, he was elected city marshal for Belle for four years and served in the Gasconade County sheriff's office and Eureka Police Department, for a total of 22 years in law enforcement.

He has two degrees in criminal justice and is a certified law enforcement instructor in Missouri, and he teaches at the police academy in Jefferson City.

After the results came in Tuesday night, Heitman said he was overwhelmed by the support of Maries County residents.

"I didn't expect to win every precinct, but it was truly humbling, and it was great to see the citizens come out," Heitman said.

Priorities for Heitman moving forward include updating the county's 911 center and jail.

"There's still a lot of improvements that need to be done to the office," Heitman said. "I think we're fantastic considering the resources we have, but we need to work on improving our jail and our 911 center."
