Salvation Army Thrift Store closing due to flood damage

Problems that came about at The Salvation Army Thrift Store after flooding last year have persisted, Salvation Army Capt. Justin Windell said.

Windell, who is self-quarantined at home this week after having returned from several weeks abroad, said a problem appears to have developed while he was away.

Weak areas appear to have developed in the floor of the building at 718 Michigan St. in Jefferson City, Windell said.

"To keep our staff and customers safe, The Salvation Army Thrift Store will be closing until further notice," he said in a news release Thursday.

The Salvation Army is uncertain the building is safe to work in at this time. Staff are waiting on an engineer to assess the floor and provide some answers.

That person is expected to perform the task sometime around April 2.

The thrift store is a vital component to the organization's fundraising efforts, Windell said.

It typically brings in about $73,000 annually to help run multiple programs within The Salvation Army and its Center of Hope shelter.

"The Salvation Army has been working with the thrift store staff to provide continued employment opportunities within our organization," according to the news release. "This will provide much needed assistance in other service areas and allow for them to continue to work during this closure."
