A Jefferson City woman died from injuries she received during a house fire Sunday night.

The victim was identified as Carla K. Palmero, 60, according to Jefferson City Fire Department reports.

Fire crews were dispatched at 6:12 p.m. to her residence in the 1000 Block of Laurel Drive. The first arriving engine company reported heavy fire showing from the front and side of the structure.

Fire crews entered the structure, quickly located the victim on the first floor and removed her. Emergency personnel treated her at the scene before transporting her to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Fire crews continued suppression efforts and had the fire under control within 20 minutes. They remained on the scene until 11 p.m.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office was called to the scene to investigate, and eventually the cause of the fire was ruled an accident. Fire officials believe it started in or around the fireplace on the first floor.

Initial reports had indicated the fire may have originated in the kitchen due to an oven being on at the time of the fire. Those reports were proven unrelated to the fire.
