Jefferson City will be one of several locations in Missouri to host a Missouri Department of Conservation Eagle Day in the coming eagle watch season.

Eagle watching in Missouri is "spectacular" from December through February, according to a news release from MDC.

Eagles migrating south from Canada and the Great Lakes will take up residence in Missouri in the winter around open water - rivers, lakes, wetlands - and plentiful food sources.

Jefferson City's MDC Runge Nature Center, at 330 Commerce Drive, will host an MDC Eagle Day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 1.

Eagle Days will include "live captive-eagle programs, exhibits, activities, videos and guides with spotting scopes. Watch for eagles perched in large trees along the water's edge. View them early in the morning to see eagles flying and fishing. Be sure to dress for winter weather and don't forget cameras and binoculars," according to the MDC news release.

More information is available by calling 573-526-5544, ext. 3407.

Eagle watchers can also go out on their own. Local hot spots for eagle viewing in the winter include the Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area on Route K southwest of Columbia and the Lake of the Ozarks at Bagnell Dam Access east of Bagnell.
