Mid-Missouri counties prepare for Tuesday's election

While some counties in Mid-Missouri will hold elections Tuesday, Cole County will not have an election.

The Cole County clerk's office reports no issues are to be voted on Tuesday, and the next election is scheduled for March 10, when Missouri's presidential primary will be held.

However, some Mid-Missouri voters have an opportunity to vote Tuesday.

Callaway County

In Callaway County, voters will be asked to decide two propositions introducing a pair of half-cent sales taxes to improve criminal justice facilities and salaries.

Proposition 1 would be an ongoing tax - without a built-in sundown. In addition to helping pay for the construction and operation of facilities, it's also aimed at expanding and better compensating the county's law enforcement officers.

Proposition 2 is aimed directly at paying for a new justice center, expanding law enforcement facilities and renovating the existing courthouse into offices. It would expire within 21 years and cannot be implemented unless voters approve Proposition 1.

Osage County

In Osage County, voters will be asked to decide whether to approve a sales tax to help improve law enforcement services in the county. It would require a simple majority to pass.

Osage County Sheriff Mike Bonham estimated the tax would generate $500,000-$600,000 a year.

Osage County already has a law enforcement sales tax, but the majority of that money goes to fund the 911 Center, Bonham said. This tax, if passed, would be used for wages and equipment for Osage County Law Enforcement. Currently, the county general revenue funds pay for the operation of the Sheriff's Department.

Lake of the Ozarks area

In the three counties that make up the Lake of the Ozarks area (Camden, Miller and Morgan counties), voters will be asked if they want to approve increasing the lodging tax in the Lake of the Ozarks Area Business District from 5 percent to 8 percent.

This would provide funds to promote tourism in the district, including the construction, operation and maintenance of sports facilities, according to the ballot language.

Maries and Moniteau counties have nothing on the ballot Tuesday.
